What is a CT Technologist?
A CT technologist, also known as a computed axial tomography (CAT) scan technologist, operates radiological scans to identify a disease or determine the extent of an injury. CT and CAT scans use radiation to determine the shape of organs, soft tissue and bones inside a person, and then a computer generates a 3D image with that information. A CT technologist guides a patient through this exam and prepares the scan results for other health care providers. They often work in hospitals, doctor’s offices and imaging centers.
What does a CT Technologist do?
A CT technologist is responsible for assisting patients and operating equipment to perform radiologic exams. They prepare and calibrate the CT scanning equipment. The technologist explains the process to the patient, positions them for the scan and helps them remain calm during the procedure. After the procedure, the technologist evaluates the image closely to make sure it’s clear.
In addition to CT and CAT scans, a technologist may also perform ultrasounds, X-rays or mammograms, and they can run additional diagnostic tests. Their other duties might include the following:

How to Become a CT Scan Technologist
Here are the steps to work as a CT or CAT scan technologist:
1. Check The Local Requirements
The requirements to be a CT technologist vary by state, so check your local regulations before you begin a course of study. Most states require CT technologists to have certifications or licensure, and there may be several available pathways to become an approved technologist. The computed tomography certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is a widely recognized certification, and many states use it as a standard credential to work as a technologist.
2. Earn an Associate Degree
To become certified, enroll in an accredited program to earn an associate degree in radiography, diagnostic medical sonography or nuclear medicine technology. Many practical schools and community colleges offer these programs, and teaching hospitals may also offer educational opportunities. In an associate degree program, you typically take a variety of courses in radiology equipment and processes, patient care and human anatomy.
You also have the option to earn a four-year bachelor’s degree in radiology or radiologic technology. This educational pathway may be a good option if you plan to earn a master’s degree or doctorate in radiology.
3. Become Certified
After you’ve completed an accredited degree program, pursue certification through the ARRT in radiography, nuclear medicine technology or radiation therapy. The ARRT requires you to have this initial certification before you can earn a CT credential. To become certified in one of these areas, you can submit an application and pass an examination in your chosen discipline.
4. Meet Requirements for the CT Credential
Once you’ve earned an initial certification, you can meet additional requirements to earn the CT credential through the ARRT. The organization requires you to complete 16 hours of structured education within the last two years to be eligible for this certification. You can complete this education through an accredited college program, continuing education or a combination of the two. The education you complete includes at least one hour in each of these areas:
- Patient care
- Safety
- Image production
- Procedures
The ARRT also has a clinical requirement for CT certification, which you can earn by working in an entry-level role at a doctor’s office, hospital or imaging center. To fulfill this requirement, you complete 125 CT scans under the supervision of a registered technologist or an interpreting physician.
5. Pass The Computed Tomography Exam
When you’re ready to earn your computed tomography certification, submit documentation of your 16 educational hours and 125 procedures to the ARRT. The application also includes three professional ethics questions. After succumbing your application, you can schedule a time to take the CT exam. The exam includes 165 scored questions related to patient care, safety, image production and procedures.
The ARRT uses scaled scoring, so the number of right answers required to pass depends on your version of the exam. If you don’t pass on the first effort, you can take the exam three times over three years to earn the credential.
6. Obtain a State License
In some states, earning the CT certification means you’re qualified to perform computed tomography scans. Other states also require you to have a license, which may involve proving your credentials or taking additional exams. The BLS predicts employment in this field to grow 6% by 2031. That’s about as fast as the average growth of other occupations in the workforce. The increasing demand for CT technologists may come as the population ages and more people require CT scans for diagnostic procedures, according to the BLS.
